Chapter Nine

Anna

I quite shockingly have two minutes while the phones don't ring. I'm cleaning up my area when Dulce shows up for my lunch break. She has the Saver Sheet pulled up on her tablet and she waves a copy at me. "Anna, sweetheart! I circled the ads for you! There might be some furniture you like in there."

I smile at her. "Thank you!" I pull it up on my tablet and there's a giant ad for Habitat for Humanity's Tiny House Day. Apparently the goal is to take the furniture out of the houses that have already been built, put up insulation and drywall, and paint them inside. The idea is to do it quickly so that the houses are completed on the entire property all in the same day. If for some reason the drywall or paint doesn't dry, they will put the residents' furniture in tents and the residents will stay in hotels. I'm very excited to think about working on it.

I point out the ad. "Dulce, are you going to be working for the Habitat for Humanity thing?"

She shakes her head. "Nope. I've got Rita." Dulce likes to take her daughter, Rita, to free things, like the park and on bike rides.

I nod my head. "Of course." I have to figure out what I'm going to do with Cole if I decide to go. You can't take a five-year-old to a Habitat for Humanity event. I wonder if I could leave him with Tegan, but she might be otherwise occupied. I haven't spoken to her since last week, because we've both been very busy. My mom is scheduled to arrive next week, and I've made major headway on her furniture. But, if I can give some time to people who need help, that would be great.

I look at the ad more closely. They have bought the land and they are grading it for two other properties. "What would we do there if we're not building the houses?"

Dulce laughs. "They're gonna have everything. Container gardens, pathways, laundromat, all of those things that people would need in order to have housing units that are that small. You also need outdoor spaces, like porches. They've made the concrete pours. I know because my cousin Gilly is in construction. They make the houses off site, and they're on wheels and they can be rolled in. That means anyone with carpentry experience can help."

I shake my head. "I work on furniture, primarily."

Dulce shrugs. "Well, a lot of them need a mattress and box springs on the floor in a loft, or some of them have twin-size beds for the little ones. You might be able to get something, maybe outdoor furniture. They need a lot of that."

I shake my head. "Well, that could work. But, since I worked on furniture all week, I don't want to work on furniture for Habitat for Humanity. I'll have to think about it."

And that starts my foray into tiny house videos. I'm astonished how much living people can get into very small spaces.
